Make it three wins in a row to open the season for the Frontier baseball team. 

On the road in Hadley to play Hopkins Academy in Suburban League West action on Wednesday, Joey Hutkoski tossed six scoreless innings before Carter Miller shut things out in the seventh, allowing the Redhawks to move to 3-0 with a 5-0 victory. 

Hutkoski struck out five and walked three while Miller struck out two in the win. 

Ben Caron went 2-for-3 with two steals, a run and an RBI, Kaden James singled to drive in a run while Miller stole two bases and scored twice for Frontier. 

Chace Earle pitched six innings for the Golden Hawks, striking out six and surrendering just two earned runs. Carter Styspeck and Harry West each hit safely for Hopkins. 

Pioneer 14, Easthampton 0 (5) — The Eagles were only able to manage two hits against the Panthers in a Suburban League West loss in Easthampton Wednesday.

Jason Sigda and Jake Kostek recorded the base knocks for the Eagles.

Ludlow 7, Amherst 2 — Colin Beganny tallied the lone Hurricanes hit on the day as Amherst dropped Wednesday’s contest thanks to four Lions runs across the fifth and six innings.

Greg King pitched five innings for Amherst, surrendering four earned on seven hits while striking out nine.

Mount Greylock 19, Granby 4 (4) — The Mounties scored 13 runs in the first two frames to overwhelm the Rams and pull away to win in four innings on Wednesday.

Granby scored three runs in the top of the fourth. 

Joseph Barrett knocked a pair of singles and drove in two runs (Brodie Funk and Gavin Moreno) to pace the Granby offense.

Chicopee 7, Northampton 6 — Their season opener was delayed after Monday’s postponement, but the Blue Devils finally got to play some baseball on Wednesday afternoon.

Northampton hung toe-to-toe with the Pacers, but ultimately suffered a one-run loss in a nailbiter at Szot Park in Chicopee.

Softball

Monson 7, Belchertown 5 — The Orioles rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the comeback attempt fell just shy in a two-run defeat to Monson on Wednesday afternoon.

Emily Waller, Lila Roy (two RBIs) and Kaiya Cavanaugh all collected two hits apiece, while Kina Roy (one hit, one run), Valerie Williams (one hit) and Natalie Rose (RBI) contributed offensively for Belchertown. Madeline Williams pitched a complete game for the Os, striking out three Mustangs batters.

Ware 17, Smith Academy 5 (6) — Abigale McQuaid was a force on both sides of the diamond for Ware, posting nine strikeouts in the circle, plus adding two hits and three runs scored at the plate.

For the Falcons, Caitlin Graves hit a single, double, scored one run and had two RBIs, while pitcher Sophia Jagodzinski struck out six.

Easthampton 16, Mahar 1 (5) — Summer Routhier tossed a no-hitter for the Eagles, going all five innings with a remarkable 16 strikeouts. She walked three Mahar batters and hit one for the Senators’ only base runners.

Easthampton’s first win of the season comes in style.

Boys lacrosse

East Longmeadow 11, South Hadley 6 — Averey Haber (two goals, one assist) and Rush Camacho (one goal, three assists) had strong performances for the Tigers, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Spartans on Wednesday.

Tyler Denison (one assist), Hunter Skibel and Mason Peters rounded out South Hadley’s scoring while Brayden Blais made 14 saves in the cage.

Amherst 10, Lenox 5 — Tri Nguyen netted four goals and dished out three assists in a dominant performance on Wednesday to push the Hurricanes past Lenox.

Tre Bowman added three goals of his own, Brian Cruz scored twice and Silas Hazen tallied one goal and two assists. Jason Kim recorded a dozen saves in goal for Amherst, which outscored the Millionaires 3-0 in the fourth quarter.

Girls lacrosse

East Longmeadow 15, Northampton 3 — Makayla Fydenkevez found the back of the cage twice as she led the Blue Devils’ offense on Wednesday night on the road.

Imanni Power-Greene tallied the other Northampton goal as ‘Hamp dropped to 1-1 on the year.

Boys tennis

PVCICS 5, Turners Falls 0 — The Dragons improved to 3-0 and picked up their first league win of the season as they swept the Thunder at Hampshre College on Wednesday afternoon.

Lee Ferguson didn't drop a game at first singles, winning 6-0, 6-0, but for once, he wasn't first off the courts. That honor went to Teddy Scott, who won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. His brother James also won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles as nobody lost a game in singles matches for PVCICS.

At first doubles, Gabe Loinaz and Simon Speek won 6-1, 6-0, while James Ferrer and Alex Rachele made their doubles debut and picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at second doubles.

Girls tennis

Belchertown 5, Pope Francis 0 — The Orioles won all five matches in straight sets to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Amanda Murray (6-2, 6-1), Mia Corish (6-0, 6-2) and Aleksandra Randall (6-2, 6-2) swept singles matches for Belchertown. The first doubles team of Edith Audette and Katie Collins cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win, while No. 2 doubles Arabella Smith and Kyla Giroux were 6-3, 6-3 winners.

Amherst 4, Minnechaug 1 — Both doubles matches went to the Hurricanes on Wednesday, as Aliya Osman and Daniella Sherman cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 while Elena Ruíz and Cynthia Tian won their match 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2.

Emma Learned-Miller (second singles) picked up a 6-1, 6-0 triumph and Mahima Ganesan was victorious with the same score at third singles to round out the Amherst winners.

PVCICS 5, Turners Falls 0 — Elisa Shinn (6-3, 6-1), Sabine Loinaz (6-0, 6-2) and Lien Moran (6-0, 6-0) won their singles matches to help the Dragons earn a sweep on Wednesday afternoon.

Eloise Tolejo and Kendall Christenson (6-1, 6-2) picked up a first doubles victory and Chelsea Chartier and Kaylin Lane (6-1, 6-0) breezed to a No. 2 doubles win as well for PVCICS.

Ludlow 5, Northampton 0 — The Blue Devils were swept by the Lions in a Valley Wheel League match on Wednesday.

Northampton’s first doubles tandem of Casey Barber and Giselle Ohm were in the closest match of the day, falling 6-1, 6-4.

Boys volleyball

Longmeadow 3, Belchertown 0 — The Orioles fought hard against the powerhouse Lancers, but ultimately fell in three sets on Wednesday afternoon to drop to 1-1 on the year.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-19, 25-18.

Gabriel Ibekilo put down a team-high five kills while Noah Yankson had four, Ryan Shea recorded three blocks at the net and Colin Mullen dished out 10 assists for Belchertown.

Ultimate Frisbee

Amherst 15, NMH 0 — The Hurricanes girls varsity team traveled up to Northfield on Wednesday and opened their 2025 season with an emphatic 15-0 victory over Northfield Mount Hermon.

Amherst was led by seniors Addie Mager (four assists, two goals), Isla Cusick (four assists) and Felix Goeckel (four goals) in the dominant win.
