TURNERS FALLS — After the opening frame between the Easthampton and Turners Falls volleyball teams on Wednesday, it looked like a potential five-set match was in store. 

The Eagles took an early lead and led late in the first set when the Thunder caught fire. Turners scored the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead with a 26-24 triumph. 

From there, it was all Turners as the hosts opened up an 8-0 lead in set two before taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-7 win. In the third, the Thunder earned a 25-13 win to defeat the Eagles, 3-0, in an independent match. 

“I told them they wouldn't get the reference but you're Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Easthampton coach Molly Jacobson said. “You have two different personalities. I want to know who they are because either I have to deal with losing all season or winning a little more.”

Easthampton’s Summer Routhier dished out five assists, Kierra Carson tallied two kills and four digs, Lidie Buttrick finished with two kills and five digs, Camilla Corsello recorded three blocks and two kills while Brooke Skowron put down a pair of aces in the loss. 

Smith Voc 3, Granby 0 – Smith Voc took a commanding win on Tuesday, 25-8, 25-15, 25-19. 

Heidymar Diaz-Lopez totaled four aces, 12 assists, two digs and three kills and Roma Bentrewicz recorded six aces, five assists, and three kills. 

South Hadley 3, Duggan 0 – The Tigers moved to 6-1 with a 25-13, 25-17, 25-11 win over the Jayhawks. Sophomore Maya Thielen impressed with five aces and some stellar defensive plays. Ella Schaeffer led South Hadley with six kills and Grace Matyszewski led with six aces.

Smith Academy 4, Mount Everett 1 – Cajun Benson tallied a hat trick and an assist and Grayson Zima also scored to lead Smith Academy to a 3-1 start to the year. Falcons goalie Jake Wilcox made six saves.

Frontier 0, Monument Mountain 0 – Frontier stayed unbeaten at 5-0-1 in a goalless road draw.

South Hadley 4, Mahar 0 – The Tigers received contributions from four different goal scorers – Jack Chagnon, Matt Gillis, Carlos David and Joe Sabourin. Sabourin, Moki Kovacs and PJ Lavelle recorded assists and goalie Noah Carillon made a pair of saves.

PVCICS 3, Pathfinder 1 – Jonathan Malone started the scoring in the second minute, and after Pathfinder answered, Patrick Canavan Gosselin tallied before the first half was over. James Scott scored the final goal, off an assist from Nolan Gage. PVCICS goalie Damian Loinaz made a dozen saves.

Granby 3, Hopkins Academy 0 – The Rams moved to 2-2-1 thanks to goals from Brandon Carillon, Gavin Moreno and Cody White and six saves from Daniel Santiago. Golden Hawks goalie Logan Bye made five saves.

Girls soccer

Hampshire 1 Wahconah 0 – Addie Miklasiewicz scored the afternoon’s lone goal, assisted by Shayne Moynahan. Goalie Ella Cleary made five saves.

Northampton 2, Southwick 0 – The Devils moved to 5-0 thanks to goals from Olivia Busone and Lilah Sage and an assist from Malia Silver. Goalie Anna Oravec made nine saves.

Field hockey

Amherst 2, Palmer 0 – Lucia Ding-Early and Zoey Candito scored to give the ‘Canes a bounceback win and a 4-1 start to the season.

Frontier 5, Minnechaug 2 – Frontier came back from down 1-0 in the first quarter to score four times in the second quarter and run away with a win Wednesday afternoon. Ashlie Galenski scored a hat trick, Macy DeMaio and Ashley Taylor scored a goal apiece and Kyra Richards made three saves in net. 

Golf

Belchertown 159, Amherst 187 — Michael Murray fired a match-low round of 35 while his teammate Jared Haynes was close behind, turning in a 37, to lead the Orioles to a dominant win on Wednesday.

Brady Jolly (42) and Daniel Hulmes (45) rounded out Belchertown’s scorers. Amherst was led by Ben Scott (41) and Nate Ziomek (44) while Callum Bohne (49) and Graham Van Giesson (53) also scored for the ‘Canes.

Frontier 159, Monson 198 – A 1-over 36 from Ryan Cetto powered the Redhawks to another decisive victory on Wednesday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.

Jacob Cornelison (40), Brady Wood (41) and Porter Hall (42) were the other scorers for Frontier, which improved to 7-3 overall thanks to its fourth straight win.

Hampshire 177, Ware 211 – The Raiders moved to 9-2 behind a medalist performance from Riley Florek, who shot a 41. Ashton Lashway scored a 42, Cole Boissonneault scored a 45 and Zach Phakos shot a 49.

Boys cross country

Belchertown 19, Minnechaug 42 – Ben Les placed first (17:47) over the 3.1 miles on Wednesday, followed by Miles McNamara in second (18:30) and Emmett Howard in third (18:58). Tyler Benedetti (19:54) and Noah Les (20:03) placed sixth and seventh.

PVCICS  28 (38), Frontier 28 (40); PVCICS 22, Granby 38; PVCICS 15, St. Mary's 50; Frontier 21, Granby 37; Frontier 15, St. Mary's 50; Granby 22, St. Mary's 35 – Both PVCICS and Frontier came into the meet with undefeated records and they were tied at 28 when scores from the top-five runners came out, but No. 6 runner Adolphus Yap (12th, 19:55) broke the tie to keep the Dragons’ unblemished record going.

Frontier’s Evan Hedlund won the race in 17:43.

PVCICS was led by Grafton Tolopko (second, 17:44), Owen Bauman (fifth, 18:26), RJ Allen took (seventh, 18:44) and Asa Taggert (10th, 19:30).

Girls cross country

Minnechaug 15, Belchertown 50 – The Orioles’ top-five runners were Kylie Fitzgerald (ninth, 26:03), Katherine Dorman (16th, 28:39), Meru Causeway (20th, 29:06), Aubrey Harrington (22nd, 29:13) and Lucia Hellyar (31st, 30:41).

Frontier 24, PVCICS 32; Frontier 15, Granby 44; Frontier 15, St. Mary’s 50; PVCICS 15, St. Mary's 50; PVCICS 19, Granby 39; Granby 15, St. Mary's 46 – Sylvie DiBartolomeo paced the field by nearly a full minute, taking down the 3.1-mile course at Hampshire College in 20:46. Teammates Liv Christensen (fourth, 22:07), Phoebe Radner (sixth, 22:56), Maia Christensen (eighth, 22:56) and Maddie Antes (ninth, 23:13) finished in the top 10.

PVCICS’ Sarah Fardal took second (21:44), followed by fellow Dragons Ella Maier (fifth, 22:11), Astrid Knyt (seventh, 22:56) and Eunice Lo (10th, 23:24). Granby’s Addison Hill took third (21:39), followed by Grace Cooney (15th, 24:13) and Quinlin Cook (16th, 24;24).

Williston results

The Williston boys soccer team captured a 3-0 win over Cushing Academy on Wednesday, while the girls soccer team blanked Cheshire Academy, 1-0.

The boys water polo team got past Westminster, 17-9, while the girls volleyball team fell to Hotchkiss, 3-0.

Frontier 6, Holyoke 2 — The Redhawks did it by committee on Tuesday evening, with six different players recording points in a decisive win over the Purple Knights. Maddie Fagan (two), Skyler Steele, Faythe Sobieski, Jazzy Hayes and Carly Robertson netted Frontier’s goals while Maggie Nichols (two), Robertson (two) and Fagan added assists.

Leilany Figueroa and Kyra Lippman each scored off assists from Kayshaly Garcia and Ishanellys Rivera to make up the Holyoke scoring in the loss.

Field hockey

East Longmeadow 5, Northampton – A career-high 41 saves from goalie Charlotte Johnson-Mersack highlighted the night for the Blue Devils in a loss to Valley League powerhouse East Longmeadow. 

The Spartans led 3-0 at halftime.

Girls cross country

Amherst 24, Longmeadow 33 — Although the Lancers placed two in the top three, the ‘Canes were responsible for second place as well as spots four, five six and seven as they battled for a win over Longmeadow on Tuesday afternoon.

Brooke Nedeau finished in 20:57 to lead Amherst while Felix Goeckel (fourth) crossed the line in 21:03. Lilly Pope (fifth) was close behind with a 21:07, Skylar Fox (21:08) was right there for sixth and Genivieve Dole turned in a 21:11 for seventh place. Elizabeth Sawicki (21:39) cracked the top 10 as well for the Hurricanes.

Longmeadow’s Lucy Connell won the race in a time of 20:40.
