High schools: Zola Higham torches Taconic for 28 points in Amherst’s 55-33 win

The Amherst girls basketball senior poured in a game-high 28 points, including 17 in the first half, to help the Hurricanes to a 55-33 victory over Taconic on Wednesday in Amherst.

The ’Canes led 28-21 before limited Taconic to just three points in the third quarter and nine in the fourth. Shannon Klaes tossed in 12 points for Amherst (2-6), and Niyama Adadevoh added six points.

Smith Voc 36, Smith Academy 34 – The Vikings held visiting Smith Academy to just two points in the final quarter, grinding out a 36-34 victory in Northampton on Wednesday night.

Smith Academy led 23-21 at halftime and 32-30 entering the fourth. Makayla Tatro paced the Vikings with 14 points, and Jayanna Daniels followed with 13 points.

Smith Academy’s Emilia Neves paced her side with nine points, and Alexa Jagodzinski notched eight points.

Central 75, Holyoke 34 – Kiara Perez (11 points) and Amilyan Treadwell-Mercedes (10) scored in double figures for the Purple Knights.

Longmeadow 66, Northampton 60 — Something had to give in Wedneday’s battle of unbeatens. The Lancers (8-0) squeaked out a win over the Blue Devils (7-1) thanks to a 22-point fourth quarter in which they outscored Northampton by seven.

Ava Azzaro led the way with 20 points for the Blue Devils, while Bri Heafey (15) and Emme Calkins (11) combined for 26 points. Northampton held onto a slim halftime lead (33-31) and gripped a one-point lead at the end of three (45-44).

No team had scored over 40 on Northampton all season, and Longmeadow erupted for 66 in the win.

Boys basketball

Smith Academy 69, Lee 55 — Garret Willard (23) and Greg Stone (22) combined for 45 points as the Falcons outscored the Wildcats 42-29 in the second half to pull away with the win.

Cam Graves and Connor Kowalski each chipped in eight points, while Jake Wilcox and Ryan McCoy added four points apiece to round out the Smith Academy scoring. Lee led 15-12 after the first quarter, but the Falcons dominated the rest of the way.

Monson 79, Hampshire 69 (2OT) – Adam Golasinski dropped a game-high 29 points for Hampshire in a wild double overtime loss to Monson on Wednesday night.

The teams were tied at 56 following regulation. Monson led 32-29 at half.

Vynce Carr netted 16 points for the Raiders, with Ben Pierce adding seven on the night.

Hoosac Valley 75, Belchertown 55 – Shea MacLeod scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the first quarter for the Orioles on Wednesday.

Jackson Couchon joined him in double figures with 13 points for Belchertown.
