NORTHAMPTON — A Holyoke man will serve six to seven years in state prison after pleading guilty to multiple felony charges involving illegal conduct committed while driving through Northampton in early January 2024.
Claudio Echevarria-Perez, 28, pleaded guilty in Hampshire Superior Court on Dec. 20 before Judge Bertha D. Josephson to the numerous charges relating to driving through Northampton in an unregistered, uninsured Mercedes while carrying a loaded Glock-19 pistol and 330 bags of heroin while his 5-year-old son sat in the car with him.
As part of a plea agreement, Echevarria-Perez was found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm with a prior conviction for a violent crime; unlawful possession of ammunition with a prior conviction for a violent crime; unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device; possession with intent to distribute fentanyl; and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
The agreement was reached by prosecutor and Assistant District Attorney Andrew Covington and Echevarria-Perez’s attorney Jonah Goldsmith. The commonwealth agreed to drop several other felony charges against Echevarria-Perez as part of the agreement.
“Based on the serious nature of the firearm and drug charges, the Commonwealth believes that the State Prison sentence handed down today was warranted,” said Covington in a statement.
Echevarria-Perez had been out on bail following his arrest, but had been required to wear a GPS monitor and not allowed to leave his house except for work, meetings with his lawyer or religious reasons. He also had a prior history of felonies, with prior convictions of violent crime and the subject of several restraining orders.
