EASTHAMPTON — Precinct 1 Councilor James Kwiecinski will serve as the City Council’s new vice president after receiving the unanimous approval of his fellow councilors at Wednesday night’s meeting.

Initially, three councilors had indicated interest in the vice presidential position. Clerk to the council Barbara LaBombard had even been practicing the ranked-choice voting system at home to prepare for the showdown. But ultimately, the two other candidates bowed out, paving the way for Kwiecinski to take the seat.

Kwiecinski’s fellow councilors spoke highly of him, expressing faith that he would serve the community well in his new position.

“I think you’ll do exceptionally well in this role,” said Councilor Koni Denham, who said that Kwiecinski has “a lot of integrity.”

Councilor Salem Derby — the council’s former vice president, acting as president since the council’s previous president, Homar Gomez, was elected as a sate representative — has served with Kwiecinski on the council for about 20 years. Derby said that over those years he has found Kwiecinski to be “wise” and “dedicated.”

Councilor Owen Zaret said that he has come to admire the “stately” way that Kwiecinski carries himself, as well as his ability to find the “middle road” and ways to unite many different people.

Councilor Tamara Smith noted that she has always found Kwiecinski knowledgeable of the City Charter and willing to have open debates.

“I really think you’re going to do a great job in this position and I’m grateful that you’re here,” she said.
