Faraby Walker, Kelly Silliman, Melissa Dimetres: What’s in store at Northampton Center for the Arts

We represent the Northampton Center for the Arts, one of three programming organizations that operates out of the Northampton Community Arts Trust building at 33 Hawley St. We were happy to see a great article about “Making Ground” (“Leaving an artistic footprint,” Gazette, Feb. 16), an initiative of our building partner A.P.E., Ltd. to “integrate the expressions of artists and other community members into the very structure of an arts space” before it goes under construction.
We know the arts landscape can be confusing to the community, however, and we want to clarify the relationships and upcoming construction plans at 33 Hawley. The building at 33 Hawley belongs to the Northampton Community Arts Trust, a visionary organization created to own and maintain affordable space for artists in Northampton. It is programmed by three separate non-profits: Northampton Center for the Arts, A.P.E., Ltd., and Northampton Open Media. Last year, the Trust was awarded a federal earmark that will cover almost everything needed to finish the building. The construction is scheduled to begin in March 2023. The building will be closed Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Northampton Center for the Arts will continue to program the Flex, Eli’s Room, and Carole’s Dance Studio after 4 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends through the end of August 2023. A.P.E.’s Workroom will be closed from March 6 through the end of 2023; programming at the gallery on Main Streeet will continue. Northampton Open Media will close its 33 Hawley space to the public from March 1 through Dec. 1, 2023, but will maintain public hours at their home location inside Northampton High School at 380 Elm St.
Starting in September 2023, and continuing for a few months, 33 Hawley will be completely shut down until the project is complete. We are all hopeful and expecting that the building will be fully open for business again in January 2024. At that point, we look forward to many more years of uninterrupted artistic programming with and for our community!
