Thanks, Razvan Sibii, for that column [“Should America be a synonym for USA?” Gazette,May 21]. I similarly had for many years been called to account for use of the term America and American by friends outside the U.S. who consider themselves proudly part of what they term The Americas. Some of them say North America and North American but to me that somehow excludes Canada (and literally Mexico). This is long before the term “woke” was coined and before even “politically correct.” At any rate, I solved the problem by referring to us as U.S. Americans, easy to say, accurate and comfortable. Try it! Our friends to the south, proudly also residents of The Americas, will thank you for this semblance of humility as their neighbors.
