Recently, a writer on this page voiced concerns that few townspeople in Amherst know about or understand the current plans to renovate and expand the Jones Library [letter, “Most Amherst residents unaware of library project,” Nov. 14].

I have been following this important project for a long time, and I am happy to clarify details about why it is both crucial and relevant.

The Jones Library is a central hub of our downtown and a community “living room” for all. It is in need of expansion and refurbishment as we prepare for its next 100 years. Here are some of the areas that need addressing: The roof leaks, the HVAC and fire systems are out of date, and the ancient furnace guzzles natural gas. Condensation drips onto our Special Collections area.

Programs and collections are packed to overflowing. For instance, ESL tutors and their students must meet in the stacks and stairwells, Special Collections must turn away new materials, and there’s no designated space for either teen or children’s activities. Only one entrance is wheelchair accessible, the stacks are too narrow for wheelchairs, and the elevator is unreliable.

After a decade of planning and many discussions and votes, the much-vetted building plans are ready to be implemented. I offer a big thanks to those who are working so hard to meld the old with the new and who have envisioned an energy-efficient and welcoming public space. I hope other readers will join me in supporting this essential project. As Henry Ward Beecher once said, “A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life.”
