Overtime loomed between the Smith Vocational and Athol girls soccer teams on Friday.

Neither team was able to generate a ton of offensive opportunities during the MIAA Division 5 preliminary round in Northampton. The 31st-seeded Vikings and 34th-seeded Bears seemed destined for OT, until Jayanna Daniels saved the day.

Daniels tallied the game’s only goal just before the final whistle, lifting Smith Vocational into the Round of 32 via a 1-0 victory.

The Vikings will play at No. 2 Monson on Monday at 2 p.m.

No. 24 Smith Academy 5, No. 41 Avon 0 — Caitlin Graves and Anna Scagel each tallied twice, and the Falcons steamrolled their way into the Round of 32 thanks to a tidy 5-0 win on Friday in Hatfield.

Neither squad scored in the two 10-minute OT periods, leading to a shootout. UPC converted a goal late to take a 3-2 lead and its keeper, Ahmad Omar Osmanzai, made a pair of big stops to lead UPC to the Round of 16 with a penalty kick win over the Dragons.
