MIAA Tournaments: Both South Hadley lacrosse teams advance to Round of 16

Gabi Moroney and the South Hadley girls lacrosse team are moving on.

The 20th-seeded Tigers built an 8-4 halftime lead and held on late, notching an 11-10 victory over No. 13 Medway in an MIAA Division 4 Round of 32 game on Wednesday in Medway.

South Hadley will play at No. 4 Nantucket in the Round of 16, on a date and time to be determined.

Moroney scored five goals and assisted on another for the Tigers. She netted the eventual game-winning goal with 6 minutes, 19 seconds remaining in regulation, giving South Hadley an 11-9 advantage.

Medway pulled within 11-10 with 5:27 to play thanks to a goal from Allie Buonaccorsi, but the Tigers and goalie Ashley Scott (7 saves) held the hosts off the board the rest of the way to survive and advance.

Meghan Carey and Ella Marion scored two goals apiece in the win, and Olivia Marion had a goal and four assists for South Hadley. Kacie Levrault also found the back of the net on the afternoon.

South Hadley stormed out to a 4-0 lead and never trailed.

No. 10 Tyngsborough 22, No. 23 Granby 11 – The Rams had their impressive season come to an end on the road in the Div. 4 Round of 32 on Wednesday night.

Tyngsborough led 14-7 at halftime and outscored Granby 8-4 after intermission.

Boys lacrosse

No. 20 South Hadley 14, No. 13 Old Colony 9 – A monster first half propelled the Tigers to a road upset victory, capping off an impressive day for the South Hadley lacrosse programs as the boys joined the girls with a 13-9 Div. 4 Round of 32 victory on the road in Rochester.

The Tigers led 5-2 after one quarter and 12-5 at halftime to put the game out of reach. They’ll play the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 4 Weston and No. 29 Whittier Regional in the Div. 4 Round of 16.

Ethan Roy and Owen Dawson tallied four goals apiece to guide South Hadley offensively, while Brock Fitzell found the back of the net twice in the victory. Charlie Anischik added a goal and three assists up front, and goalie Bennett Allen recorded 14 saves.

Baseball

No. 7 Bourne 8, No. 10 Granby 7 – The Rams saw their postseason run come to an end in a close loss to No. 7 Bourne. 

No further details were reported. Bourne will travel to No. 2 Georgetown in the Div. 5 quarterfinals. 

Boys tennis

No. 9 Hingham 4, No. 25 Amherst 1 – The Hurricanes managed one match win against Hingham in a 4-1 loss during the Division 2 Round of 16 on Wednesday. 

No. 9 Hingham will face top-seed Concord-Carlisle in the quarters. Concord-Carlisle knocked off No. 17 Longmeadow to earn its spot in the final eight.
