There was a time when 18-year-old boys and girls joined a college athletic team and left four years later as 22-year-old men and women, confident, trained, and effective team members. Coaches had time to focus on long-term development, looking at the big picture rather than short-term gains. Coaches helped individuals identify their strengths and weaknesses, set goals, and worked to help them improve, enabling them to reach their potential. The successful coach had a basic philosophical understanding of the place of sport in the student’s life. Good coaches understood that their athletes were also students and that achievement in the classroom was paramount to success.

The UMass hockey team couldn’t have asked for a better start. In the first period of the Fargo Regional final of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday against Western Michigan, the Minutemen scored first and limited the Broncos, who average four goals a game, to just five shots.

WESTHAMPTON — Runs were at a premium through five innings between the Hampshire and Frontier softball teams on Friday afternoon, as star pitchers Ryanne Dubay (Raiders) and Raine Wonsey (Redhawks) dueled it out in the circle. Heading into the bottom of the sixth with the game tied at one apiece, Hampshire head coach Brian McGan turned to small ball – the exact way his team scored its first run.

AMHERST — Well, it didn’t take long for Division 1 men’s basketball players to take advantage of the transfer portal opening on Monday. As of Friday morning, there are already more than 1,000 total D1 men’s players in the portal. Some of them are still playing in the NCAA Tournament right now. Three of them have departed from UMass.

UMass men’s lacrosse head coach Greg Cannella needed more saves. In the first game of the season against then-No. 13 Army on Feb. 8 at Garber Field, the Minutemen found themselves down 6-0 after the first 15 minutes. Graduate student goalie Tyler Bluse surrendered all six goals on 11 shots from the Black Knights during that opening quarter, putting UMass in an early hole.

The UMass women’s basketball team was in the driver’s seat entering the fourth quarter of its WNIT second round game with Buffalo on Sunday afternoon. Playing its future MAC foe, the Minutewomen led by 16 (61-45) entering the fourth quarter and looked as if they had another postseason win in the bag.
