UMass basketball: Minutewomen rout Loyola-Chicago, Minutemen hammered by VCU

It was a dominant outing for the UMass women’s basketball team Wednesday.

The Minutewomen led by 10 points after one quarter and pulled away from there, dispatching Loyola-Chicago for an 87-62 Atlantic 10 victory on Wednesday at the Mullins Center in Amherst.

UMass improved to 15-12 overall, 10-6 in the A-10 with the victory.

Megan Olbrys went for a career-high 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Stefanie Kulesza scored 19 points and pulled down eight boards. Yahmani McKayle made it three Minutewomen in double figures with 15 points and eight assists.

UMass led 27-17 after one quarter and 43-31 at halftime. The hosts shot 51 percent from the floor and made 21 of their 25 free throws.

The Minutewomen were dominant down low, outrebounding the Ramblers 41-30 and also scoring a whopping 50 points in the paint to Loyola-Chicago’s 14.

UMass looks to keep it going on Sunday when it hosts Rhode Island in a huge Atlantic 10 game at the Mullins Center. The two teams are neck-and-neck in the league standings. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Rams led 10-9 just over six minutes into the game when VCU went on an 18-2 run to take command. Later, with the Rams leading 28-16, VCU closed the half on an 18-6 run to take a 46-22 lead into the intermission, a half in which the Rams shot 52.9 percent from the field. 

VCU led by 20 or more for nearly the entirety of the second half to run away with an 80-51 Atlantic 10 victory in Richmond. 

The Rams (21-5, 11-2) finished the game 14-29 from 3-point land, five of which came from Jack Clark. Clark finished with 17 points while Max Shulga and Joe Bamisile each scored 19 points in the win. 

UMass (11-16, 6-8) conversely couldn’t get anything going from downtown, finishing 0-for-10 from 3-point range. The Minutemen shot just 32.3 percent from the field on the game. 

Daniel Rivera scored 15 points, Rahsool Diggins tallied 10 points, Malek Abdelgowad scored six points while Daniel Hankins-Sanford scored six points to go along with 10 rebounds for UMass. 

Next up for the Minutemen is a trip to the capital to take on George Washington. Tip is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday.
