The UMass men’s basketball team’s three-game win streak came to a close in Kingston on Wednesday.

Taking on rival Rhode Island on the road, things weren’t looking good for the Minutemen early in the second half, as the Rams opened the second half on a 13-0 run to take a 59-38 lead with 16:47 to play.

UMass never quit, chipping into the lead before a 7-0 run cut the deficit to 74-68 with 6:32 to play. Later, Jaylen Curry made a pair from the line and after a stop, Daniel Hawkins-Sanford knocked down a jumper with 1:12 to play that slashed the URI lead to 82-80.

That would be the final field goal UMass would make in the game however, as the Ram defense locked in while they made their free throws on the other end, as URI held on to earn an 88-82 victory.

The Rams (15-6, 4-5 Atlantic 10) were red hot from the field throughout, finishing 30-53 on shot attempts. UMass (9-12, 4-4 A-10) conversely were 30-72 from the field.

Rahsool Diggins carried the load offensively for the Minutemen, tallying 27 points. Curry tossed in 15 points, Daniel Rivera recorded 13 points, while Hankins-Sanford added 12 points in the loss.

Sebastian Thomas led URI with 22 points, Jaden House scored 19 points and David Green added 18 points in the winning effort.
