The Roost set to close in Northampton after 14 years

NORTHAMPTON — The Roost, a coffee shop located at the corner of Main and Market streets, announced on social media that it will be closing down permanently, although hinted at a potential new business may be reborn from the closure.

The Oxbow, an area in Northampton created by a branch of the Connecticut River, has seen plenty of changes since artist Thomas Cole made it the focus of a well-known 1836 painting. A new book by Northampton author Jonathan Moldover, “The Oxbow Since Thomas Cole” seeks to shed light on its history and evolution throughout the centuries.

Children’s author Eric Carle, who lived in Northampton for decades, was known for books including “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Now, those books (and a few others) are part of a puppet show, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show,” which will be at the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Tillis Performance Hall on Sunday, March 16, at 3 p.m.

AMHERST — When the final buzzer sounded to signal the end of the UMass men’s basketball team’s regular season, which ended in a 74-51 loss to Loyola Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Mullins Center, the arena’s staff immediately began tearing up the floorboards of Jack Leaman Court to get ready for the Minutemen’s hockey game at 7:30 p.m.

NORTHAMPTON — The Smith College women’s basketball team once again earned the right to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Division 3 Women’s Basketball tournament following its fifth straight NEWMAC tourney championship. The Pioneers have hosted Round of 64 and Round of 32 games for the past three seasons, so this winter makes it four in a row.

EASTHAMPTON – The Williston Northampton boys basketball team took care of business in its NEPSAC Class A first-round playoff win against St. Paul’s on Wednesday at The Sabina Cain Family Athletic Center. The top-seeded Wildcats thumped the eighth-ranked Big Red, 82-61, and were led by Preston Edmead’s 31 points as Williston advanced to the semifinal round for the first time in two years.

It feels like an eternity ago that the UMass men’s basketball team was in the mix for a second consecutive double bye in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament. Back on Feb. 4, the Minutemen gave away a late lead to Saint Louis with third place in the conference on the line. They beat La Salle the very next game, but have since dropped four in a row – losing by an average margin of 18.5 points.
