High schools: Amherst field hockey falls to defending WMass champion Franklin Tech (PHOTOS)

For over one quarter on Wednesday, the Amherst field hockey team was right within striking distance of two-time defending Western Mass. Class D champion Franklin Tech.

But the visiting Eagles struck three times in the second quarter, including a tally just as the halftime buzzer sounded. Tech tacked on two more after the break en route to a 6-0 County League victory.

Kate Trudeau scored four goals the Franklin Tech.

Amherst, which dropped to 1-3 on the season, received solid midfield contributions from Zoey Candito.

Frontier 2, Belchertown 2 — Stella Heflin scored off an assist from Macy DeMaio to open the scoring for Frontier in the first quarter before DeMaio scored herself off an assist from Heflin in the second quarter. Kyra Richards made two saves for the Redhawks. 

Bella Cebula and Mya Philpott scored for the Orioles, with assists by Edith Audette. Brooke Stelmokas made 14 saves in the Belchertown net.

Mahar 2, Smith Academy 1 — Bella Bramucci netted the Falcons’ goal on Wednesday, as Smith Academy was edged by Mahar in a Valley League contest.

Bella Gavron assisted on Bramucci’s tally, while Madison Didonna-Renner made 12 saves in the Falcons net.

Hampshire 5, Palmer 0 – Chloe Moynihan was electric for the Raiders, pouring in four goals in the team’s shutout win on Wednesday.. 

Ryleigh Fennessy also added a goal in the win. 

Golf

Belchertown 156, Amherst 222 – Another balanced effort, another victory.

The Orioles picked up another win at Cold Spring Country Club on Wednesday, riding four scoring players who finished within four shots of each other.

Jared Haynes was the medalist with a 37, right ahead of Cal Orzech (38), Michael Murray (40) and Daniel Hulmes (41).

Amherst’s Ben Scott had the low round of the day for his side with a 48, just ahead of teammate Nate Ziomek (49).  Other scorers were Oliver Hansel (62) and Owen  Howard (63).

 Hopkins 166, Easthampton 220 – Ryley Regan once again put together a solid day for the Golden Hawks, notching medalis t honors at Holyoke Country Club with a round of 38 to power Hopkins to a convincing victory on Wednesday.

Liam Flynn was close behind in the win with a round of 40, following by Jack Dyjach (44) and Cooper Beckwith (44).

Amelia Gruber continued a strong start to the season for Easthampton, shooting a team-low round of 44. Angelo Torchia (54), Maeve Loring (58) and Nico Francis (64) were the Eagles’ other scorers.

South Hadley 162, Chicopee Comp 187 – The Tigers had four of the top five scorers on the day, led by Ryan MacGregor’s 2-over 38 at Ledges Golf Club in South hadley.

Bennett Allen shot 40 for South Hadley, with Caiden Drohan (41) and Jack Maziarz (43) the other scorers in the victory.

Palmer 179, Frontier 184 — Ryan Cetto shot a match-low 42 for the Redhawks, which suffered a narrow Suburban League West defeat to the Panthers at Quaboag Country Club on Wednesday. 

Gabe Solodky (46), Cade Allenby (47) and Addy Wood (49) also scored for Frontier. 

Hampshire 170, Ware 213 – The Raiders improved to a perfect 6-0 on the season with a convincing victory at Cold Spring Country Club on Wednesday.

Hampshire had the top four scores of the day, with co-medalists Brayden Fennessey and Pryden Messier each shooting 41. Cole Boissonneault was right on their heels with a 42, and Owen Lech shot 46 to snag the No. 4 scoring slot.

Boys soccer

Hampshire 3, Frontier 1 – In a battle between two of the top teams in western Mass., the host Raiders struck twice in the game’s opening five minutes and scored a 3-1 independent win on Wednesday night in Westhampton.

Owen Miller got the scoring started right away, tallying in the opening minute, and Aidan Miklasiewicz followed just four minutes later with another goal to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Nico Fasulo cut the deficit in half for Frontier with a goal from Chanhee Son 10 minutes later, but Miklasiewicz notched his second of the night in the 74th minute to provide some insurance and secure the big win. Jesse Connors assisted on all three of Hampshire’s tallies.

“Aido's third goal was a thing of beauty,” Hampshire coach Dan Moynahan said. “The game was still in the balance and he curled it upper left hand corner to secure the win.”

Liam Pond made six saves in the victory for Hampshire.

Smith Academy 2, Gateway 0 – Cajun Benson did all the scoring for the Falcons, scoring twice unassisted, but Smith Academy peppered the Gators all night long. 

Gateway goalie Zack Hess made a valiant effort in net, stopping 15 shots, but the Gators were unable to get one past Smith Academy keeper Jake Wilcox, who made three saves for the shutout. 

Granby 5, Sci-Tech 0 – A four-goal first half was more than enough for the Rams, which rolled past Sci-Tech on Wednesday.

Colin Murdock, Gavin Moreno, Riley Goodhind, Brandon Carillion and Spencer Labonte netted the Granby goals, with Goodhind adding two assists. Jaxton Roy and Nico Grandmont also recorded helpers, and goalie Daniel Santiago made two saves for the clean sheet.

Granby improved to 3-1-1.

Pathfinder 5, PVCICS 0 – Damian Loinaz made six saves in net, including a penalty kick, and fellow goalkeeper Richard Ang stopped three shots to pace the Dragons in a 5-0 loss on Wednesday.

Evan Costa netted a hat trick for Pathfinder.

Smith Voc 5, St. Mary’s 0 – Cameron Ball posted three points (2G, 1A) and four other Vikings found the back of the net against St. Mary’s. 

Josh Cole, Jacob Maloney, Joel Charbaneau and Zack Yakovlev all scored for Smith Voc, with Chase Thayer and Carlos Ramirez picking up assists. 

Girls soccer

Monson 6, Amherst 0 – Ciara Monaghan scored twice for the visiting Mustangs, which led 5-0 at halftime en route to the victory on Wednesday in Amherst.

Neena Chinappa made seven saves in the Hurricanes net.

Southwick 1, Northampton 0 – Southwick bested Northampton in a defensive showdown on Wednesday night. 

Anna Oravec made two saves for Northampton, while Southwick keeper Sydney Demyon stopped all five shots the Blue Devils threw on net. 

Girls volleyball

Belchertown 3, Pioneer Christian 0 – A 12-kill performance from Chrissy Santiago propelled the Orioles to a dominant 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 sweep on Wednesday.

Gianna Picardi followed with seven kills for Belchertown, and Ava Shea put down five kills in the win. Setter Vivian Ross dished out 26 assists, and the Orioles totaled 16 aces as a team – four apiece from Santiago, Ross and Paige Magner.

Smith Voc 3, Granby 0 – Roma Bentrewicz dished out 14 assists, and Heidymar Diaz-Lopez went for eight kills and five digs to help the Vikings to a 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 sweep on Wednesday.

Jennifer Bouchard (two blocks, two kills), Irelyn Marcoux (two aces, two kills, three digs) and Jaelyn Kulas (five digs, two kills) were other key contributors in the win for Smith Vocational.

South Hadley 3, Duggan 0 –  South Hadley secured a win in a close second set to complete a sweep against Duggan, 25-15, 25-23, 25-8.

Raquel Losty was unstoppable at the service line, firing off 13 aces. Emily Piligian added four aces and four kills with two blocks.

Cross country

Easthampton 26, Mahar 29 —
Patrick Millin crossed the line first for the Vikings, traversing the course in Northampton with a time of 12 minutes, 30 seconds to help Smith Vocational to a tri-meet sweep on Wednesday.

Teammate Walden Groundwater was the runner-up in 12:42, while fellow Viking Aaron Fein was fourth (13:05).

Easthampton’s Will Jourdain paced the Eagles in fifth place (13:14), and teammate Josh DeSimone was eighth (13:39).
