High schools: Northampton sweeps Amherst in track opener (PHOTOS)

Ryland Breen won a pair of events for the Northampton boys track and field team, crossing the line first in the 100 meter (11.03) and 400 meter dashes (55.01) to help the Blue Devils take down rival Amherst, 99-32, in season-opening action on Monday in Northampton.

Silas Knight-Richard also won a pair for Northampton in the 110 hurdles (21.4) and 400 hurdles (1:06.1). 

Other winners for Northampton included Jack Kamins in the 800 (2:03.05), Theodore King-Pollet in the two mile (10:32), Rowan Hodgson in the 200 (23.08), Juan Jose Adams Causton in the long jump (16-5.75), Silas Coles in the high jump (5-8), Simon Dostal in the pole vault (8-6), Davis Wheat in the javelin (108-6) and Jude Mourad in the mile (4:55).

The Blue Devils also took both relays, with the 4x100 winning in 46.2 and the 4x400 winning in 3:52 flat. 

Amherst did well in the field events, with Logan Alfandari winning the shot put (51- 8.75) and Monilta Krouch taking first in the discus (140). 

Girls track

Northampton 108, Amherst 36 — The Devils picked up a 108-36 win against Amherst in their first home meet of the season. 

Kira French took first in two events, placing first in the 400 hurdles (1:12.3) and also winning the 400 meter dash (1:06.1) by seven-tenths of a second. 

Amherst's Tamar Byl-Brann also earned a pair of victories, winning the two mile (12:37) and the 800 (2:33.6).

The Blue Devils won both relays, finishing first in the 4x100 (56.8) and also in the 4x400 (4:45.0). Northampton's Yelena Caldanaro won the 100 hurdles (18.2), Coco Haenlin won the 100 dash (13.5), Norah Reade took first in the mile (5:43) and Camilla Brewer won the 200 dash (28.6). 

A pair of Amherst athletes picked up wins in the field events, with Elizabeth Sawicki placing top in the pole vault (6-6) and Courtnegail Rose winning the shot put (28-6) for the Hurricanes.

Brewer earned her second win of the day with a 34-2¾ long jump mark, Ella Hoogendyk won the long jump (13-10.5), Allie Sullivan won the high jump (4-9), Evelyn Smith took first in discus (67-2) and Monica Fisher-Piccininno won the javelin (76-5) to round out the win for the Blue Devils. 

Baseball

Belchertown 5, South Hadley 1 – South Hadley scored early in the first inning, but a five-run seventh propelled the Orioles to a win.

Brady Perkins picked up three hits and one RBI for the Orioles while pitcher Tyler McDonald secured the win with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings. 

South Hadley’s Matthew Drobiak had one run and one RBI and Nate Carillon scored the Tiger’s lone run.

Hampshire 22, Palmer 5 (5) – Drew Thomp son hit an epically long homer and brought in four RBIs in a five-inning mercy win over Palmer. 

Jack Boyle was the winning pitcher, throwing  seven Ks and walking three. 

Boyle also added a double, triple, and five RBIs while teammate Z ach Phakos had three hits and a pair of RBIs. 

Granby 11, Wahconah 10 — It was a wild start to the season for the Rams, which trailed 3-0 in the fifth inning and scored 10 runs in the home half of the frame to take a commanding lead. Visiting Wahconah rallied with seven unanswered runs to tie the game 10-10, but Granby walked off with a run in the bottom of the seventh to secure an 11-10 victory.

Shane Gaj, Daniel Gauvin, Carter White and Jonathan Santiago all had two hits for the Rams, while Colin Murdock drove in three runs and Gauvin plated a pair. Joshua Chateauneuf got the final out of the seventh and wound up with the victory on the mound. Patrick French struck out five in 6 2/3 innings as the starter.

Hopkins 6, Southwick 3 — Cody West struck out 10 in five innings as the Hawks doubled up the Rams on Monday in Southwick.

Chace Earle, Cooper Beckwith and Patrick Fitzgibbons all had two hits in the victory.

Pioneer 7, Smith Academy 2 — Smith Academy’s Griffin Smiarowski held down the Panthers for the opening four innings, with Pioneer holding a slim 1-0 lead going into the fifth. 

Pioneer got things going at the plate late however, scoring six runs in the final three innings to pull away with a Bi-County League North victory over Smith Academy in Northfield on Monday.

Logan Graves paced the offense with two hits.

Softball

Easthampton 15, Chicopee Comp 1 — Sophia Faginski struck out six in five solid innings, and Lauren Morse and Abigail McClaflin each belted home runs to lift the Eagles to a five-inning run-shortened victory on Monday.

McClaflin was 3-for-4 atop the Easthampton lineup with four runs scored, while Morse racked up five RBIs to go with her long ball. Rosie Follet added a pair of RBIs while Ana Growhowski, Kayley Downie and Jess Cloutier all smacked two hits in the win.

Granby 19, SICS 7 (6) – Mabel Carillon  pitched six innings, striking out two in Granby’s blowout victory.  She added a double and two RBIs and Grace Roy hit a pair of triples and led the team with seven RBIs. 

Cassie Flaherty blasted a triple and two RBIs and Lauren Parker picked up a double and home run along with two RBIs of her own. Ellie Szlosek also went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. 

Northampton 3, Chicopee 0 – Senior Kaliya Valentin made her first start of the season count on Monday, throwing her first career no-hitter with 14 Ks to propel the Blue Devils to a victory. In addition to the win in the circle, Valentin added two hits and two RBIs. 

Sasha Rodriguez knocked in two hits and scored twice, while Kayla Martin plated for Northampton’s other run. Blaze Lawrence-Riddell also picked up a single in the win. 

Hampshire 15, Minnechaug 0 (5) — Ashley Cortis launched a three-run double and homered, as the Raiders rolled to open the season.

Jocelyn Mettey struck out nine and allowed just one hit for Hampshire. She also went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Teagan Charles doubled and tripled with three RBIs. 

Girls lacrosse

Amherst 12, South Hadley 8 — Talia Sadiq netted four goals, and Ava Carey added three tallies of her own to help the Hurricanes get past South Hadley, 12-8, on Monday.

Amherst rallied from an 8-6 halftime deficit, outscoring the Tigers by a 6-0 margin in the second half. Abi Como and Francesca Sloan each scored twice for the ’Canes, which received 10 saves from Cedar Conrad.

South Hadley’s Margaret Watkins scored three times, and Mia Beaulieu added two goals. Hannah Kickery made eight saves in net.

Granby 17, Monson 9 — Ella Laliberte buried eight goals, and the Rams cruised to a decisive victory in action on Monday.

Granby, which led 11-4 at halftime, received five saves in net from Faith Ramos. Kelly-Lynne Kennedy tallied four goals and two assists in the win, while Brenna Mareno (2G, 1A), Mylin Laliberte (1G), Kalli White (1G), Ava Loughman (1G, 2A), Molly Zumbrowski (1A) and Ava Saunders (1A) all contributed to the offensive effort.

Boys lacrosse

South Hadley 8, Amherst 5 — A hat trick from Charlie Anischik propelled the Tigers to an 8-5 victory on Monday.

Sly Curto added two goals in the win, and Ethan Roy tallied and dished out three assists for South Hadley. Bennett Allen made 13 saves.

Amherst’s Jameson Dion tallied twice, and Skyler Ferro notched two assists. Goalie Max Frenette made nine saves.

Boys tennis

Frontier 5, SICS 0 — It was a clean sweep for the Redhawks to start the year, with Frontier taking all five matches to earn a victory over the host Bulldogs on Monday. 

Coleman Hartner picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles, Jacob Han won 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 singles and Oliver Brown walked away with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles for the Redhawks. 

The pairing of Harry Wright and Caiden Manning won 6-3, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles while Donovan Vichi and Ben Desmon earned a 6-1, 6-2 triumph in No. 2 doubles. 

PVCICS 4, Pope Francis 1 — The Dragons swept both doubles matches en route to the 4-1 win on Monday.

Teddy Scott and Clayton English earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Derek and Devan Ye notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory at second doubles.

Aidan Cleary (6-1, 6-1) and James Scott (6-1, 6-4) earned singles victories for PVCICS.

Boys volleyball

Frontier 3, Duggan 0 — The Redhawks picked up their second win of the season on Monday, heading to Springfield and walking away with a 25-6, 25-10, 25-19 sweep over Duggan. 

Jack Carey led the way with nine kills while Aleks Carey added seven kills in the victory. Owen Babb smashed seven kills and four aces, Brady Burch recorded five kills and seven aces while Tavo Vincent-Warner tossed 18 assists for Frontier. 

Ludlow 3, Belchertown 1 – Rainer Kristensen had four aces and 19 assists and Connor White and Gabriel Ibekilo each slammed down eight kills in Belchertown’s four set loss (11-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-25). 

Will Hill added six kills and three aces in the defeat.
