SOUTH HADLEY — Paul Dubuc met with his senior captains – Ava Asselin, Caitlin Dean, CC Gurek and Maddie Soderbaum – prior to the start of the season back in late November. SOUTH HADLEY — Paul Dubuc thought he wrote Cara Dean’s name down on the board as part of the list of starters for the third quarter on Tuesday night. Dean, a sophomore, is a regular in the South Hadley girls basketball team’s starting lineup. Dubuc turned to his bench and asked, “where’s Cara,” after the first possession of the second half. She was sitting down waiting patiently to get subbed back in.

After making a run to the state semifinals a year ago, the Northampton girls basketball team is once again in the mix for a Final Four berth.

SOUTH DEERFIELD — After a hard-fought loss to Pittsfield in the Western Mass. Class B semifinals, the Frontier girls basketball team was more than ready for its MIAA Division 4 tournament opener against Manchester Essex on Thursday.

HOLYOKE – In a rematch of last year’s PVIAC Class B girls basketball final, South Hadley couldn’t go back-to-back as it was edged by Pittsfield, 52-47, Saturday afternoon at Holyoke Community College.

WESTFIELD — It wasn’t a secret that the No. 2 Northampton girls basketball team would have its hands full against top-seeded Springfield Central in Saturday’s PVIAC Class A final. The Blue Devils had lost 10 straight to the Golden Eagles coming in, including a pair of decisive defeats already this winter.

A trio of Hampshire County basketball programs have made it to championship Saturday, as the Northampton and South Hadley girls teams and Granby boys team will compete in their respective title games looking to raise hardware. These same three squads all competed in the Western Mass. finals last winter and are once again back in the big game.

SOUTH HADLEY – Cara Dean’s 22 points helped the South Hadley girls basketball conquer Sprinfield International Charter School, 62-46, during the semifinal round of the PVIAC Class B girls tournament on Wednesday night.

NORTHAMPTON — The third quarter of Wednesday night’s Western Mass. Class A semifinal between No. 2 Northampton and No. 3 Minnechaug marked the most points the Blue Devils had surrendered in a frame in the sectional tournament. Northampton led by 10 at halftime, and a Bri Heafey triple boosted its advantage to 25-12. But the Blue Devils watched their once 13-point lead slip to six as a stretch of defensive lapses allowed the Falcons to go on a 10-3 run.

NORTHFIELD — After pulling out a 53-50 win in the opening round of the Western Mass. Class D Tournament against Monson on Monday, the Smith Academy boys basketball team ran into a buzzsaw in the semifinals. 

It was quite the start to the postseason for the Smith Academy boys basketball team.

NORTHAMPTON — Bri Heafey stepped to the foul line for three shots in the second quarter of the No. 2 Northampton girls basketball team’s PVIAC Class A quarterfinal matchup with No. 7 Westfield on Monday night. The Blue Devils senior needed to knock down a pair to give her 1,000 career points.

Kalli White poured in 16 of her game-high 21 points in the second half, lifting No. 4 Granby to a 57-47 win over fifth-seeded Smith Academy in the PVIAC Class D girls basketball quarterfinal round on Friday night in Granby.

Cameron Graves scored a season-high 17 points, and the Smith Academy boys basketball team turned a 19-16 halftime lead into a 44-40 victory over Hampshire Regional in Hampshire League North action on Friday night in Westhampton. The game was tied headed into the fourth quarter before the Falcons won the final eight minutes 14-10.

Another week of the high school basketball season is nearly over, which leaves just one more until the Western Massachusetts tournaments begin. This is edition No. 5 of the Gazette’s weekly high school basketball notebook – the penultimate prior to postseason play. The MIAA released its latest power rankings for boys and girls basketball on Tuesday morning, so we’ll take another look at those as Hampshire County teams continue to jockey for a playoff spot or better seeding.
