High schools: Northampton field hockey ties Westfield, continues strong start

It’s been an impressive start to the season for the Northampton field hockey team.
The Blue Devils picked up an impressive point on the road Thursday, as three different players scored goals en route to a 3-3 tie with host Westfield in a Valley League contest.
Northampton is now 3-1-1 on the season after the tie.
Camilla Brewer, Cat Dawkins and Haly Doucette-Kaplan scored goals for Northampton, with Brewer and Chloe Derby notching assists.
Goalie Charlotte Johnson-Mersack made 10 saves for the Devils, which look to keep the momentum going Friday night against Southwick at Smith College (7:15 p.m.).
Belchertown 9, Palmer 0 – Rachel Baltazar tallied two goals in the Orioles’ rout of Palmer on Thursday.
Laura Cote, Edith Audette, Mya Philpott, Bella Cebula, July Delaney, Lila Roy and Emma Magil also found the back of the net, while Gianna Zenon notched two assists.

Northampton 151, Ware 208 – Reilly Fowles went low for the Blue Devils, firing a round of 32 at Northampton Country Club to help Northampton in a dominant win over Ware.
Gus Fallon was next with a 38 for the Devils, while teammates Ben O’Connor (39) and Jack Carpenter (42) also contributed to the scoring load.
Amherst 217, Chicopee 249 – Ben Scott’s 38 was good enough for medalist honors, helping the Hurricanes roll on Thursday at Amherst Golf Club.
Nate Ziomek shot 47 to aid Amherst, while other scorers were Oliver Hansell (60) and Owen Howard (62).
Hampshire 165, Frontier 172 — Brayden Fennessy shot 38 to aid the Raiders in a tight victory over Frontier on Thursday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Owen Lech and Cole Boissonneault each shot 42 for Hampshire, while Cam Jamrosz followed with a 43.
Ryan Cetto carded a match-low 37 in the Redhawks. Cade Allenby shot a 41, Addy Wood finished with a 46 while Gabe Solodky carded a 48 to close out the Frontier scorers.
Girls volleyball
Amherst 3, Springfield Central 0 – The Hurricanes racked up 24 aces as a team, leading to a dominant sweep of the Golden Eagles in an Eastern League contest on Thursday.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-14, 25-11.
Liza Beigel and Talia Sadiq recorded seven aces apiece while Ruby Austin notched five aces in the win. Austin had a team-high seven kills and Lauren Joy followed with five, while Abigail Como racked up 10 assists and Annabel Ogden added seven. Beigel’s 20 digs were tops along the back row.
Frontier 3, Minnechaug 0 — Following a rare two-game skid, the Redhawks got back in the win column on Thursday with a 25-15, 25-10, 25-19 Eastern League victory over the Falcons in Wilbraham on Thursday.
Kate DeMaio put down eight kills and three aces, Gabby Adams finished with seven kills and six aces, Caroline Deane tallied six kills and an ace, Olivia Machon had five kills and three aces while Allie Pierce dished 19 assists in the win.
Girls soccer
Belchertown 3, Ludlow 1 – Locked in a scoreless game at halftime, the Orioles picked up second-half strikes from Mia Corish, Madison DaCosta and Mackenzie LePage en route to a solid 3-1 victory.
Corish, Fallon Clancy and Brooke Burrows assisted on Belchertown’s goals, and goalies Michaela Dubey and Jillian DeBarge combined to make seven saves.
Holyoke 5, Frontier 0 – It was a dominant outing from the Purple Knights, which held an 18-6 edge in shots en route to the Pioneer League North victory.
A hat trick from Kyra Lippman led the way, while Yasani Thompson and Tryanna Ayala also netted goals in the win for Holyoke. Ayala, Emma Shoup, Kayshaly Garcia, Lippman and Alivia Kaifer had assists.
Gateway 1, Renaissance 1 – Anna Sakaske notched the game-tying goal in the second half, helping the Gators to a 1-1 Bi-County League draw on Thursday.
Jaylianna Rivera recorded five saves for the Gators, which trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Hopkins 8, Taconic 0 – Two goals from Ephie Vissas, including the game’s first strike just three minutes in, powered the Golden Hawks to a dominant win.
Hopkins led 5-0 at halftime. Sadie Cyr, Helen Vissas, Cassidi Mushenski, Cassidy Fyden, Chloe Kosciusco and Maggie Potter also tallied in the win. Ephie Vissas and Fyden assisted on two goals each, while Juliana Eichenlaub also had a helper.
Boys soccer
Northampton 9, SICS 0 – Another big offensive performance from Sam Busone helped the Blue Devils to a 9-0 thumping of Springfield International Charter School on Thursday.
Northampton led 6-0 at halftime. Busone scored four goals, while Finn Norsen added a pair of tallies. Minti Peterson, Jasper Cantor and Owen MacLachlan also scored in the win. MacLachlan and Ryland Breen dished out two assists apiece, and goalies Salem Gregory and Sky Allen-Bresnyak combined to make four saves for the shutout in net.
South Hadley 6, Southwick 0 – The Tigers scored three goals in each half, helping win their second game in a row on Thursday.
Michael Garand and Moki Kovacs scored two goals apiece, while Avery Haber and Jackson Keller also registered goals. Nolan Masse had two assists and Ari Alatalo also notched a helper.
Football
Amherst 54, Holyoke 8 – Jameson Dion rushed for 318 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries, and the Hurricanes routed Holyoke to improve to 3-0 on the season Thursday night at the Roberts Complex in Holyoke.

Matt Hockman returned an interception for a 55-yard touchdown to aid Amherst, and he also rushed for 71 yards and a pair of scores.
Holyoke’s lone touchdown came to start the second half when Avanteay Rivera returned a kickoff 90 yards to the house.
