High schools: Amherst girls volleyball sweeps Holyoke in Class A quarterfinals (PHOTOS)

Amherst moved past Holyoke in the Western Mass. Class A girls volleyball quarterfinals in three straight sets Tuesday, besting the Purple Knights 25-11, 25-11, 25-15.
The ’Canes move on to the Class A semifinals, where they’ll face No. 3 Westfield.
Setter Annabel Ogden tossed up 18 assists while Ruby Austin rattled off 10 aces and 12 kills for the Hurricanes. Amherst’s Liza Beigel added eight aces and seven digs and Shannon Klaes had six kills in the win.
It was an impressive showing for the Hopkins golf team at the Western Mass. Div. 3 golf championship on Tuesday.
The Golden Hawks finished with a team score of 345, which placed it second overall on the day and secured it a spot at Monday’s Div. 3 state tournament at Sterling National Country Club.
“We did better than we expected,” Hopkins’ Liam Flynn said. “We had a better score today than we did when we won Western Mass. in 2016. Everyone played better than they thought they would so it was a good day for us.”
It was a consistent day for the Golden Hawk golfers. James Burke led the way with an 85, Flynn and Ryley Regan each shot an 86 while Jack Dyjach came in with an 88 to round out the Hopkins scorers.
Cooper Beckwith (91) and Christian Colokos (103) also competed for the Golden Hawks.

With the championship being a different format, Flynn said he went in with the goal of getting pars, not trying to be too aggressive out there.
“I was playing more conservative,” Flynn said. “I was hitting irons off the tee and not using a driver to try to keep it on the fairway. I was just playing par golf. It’s a little more serious and more competitive than most matches. It’s still fun and still golf.”
Regan, competing in her first Western Mass. tournament, said she enjoyed the competition and was able to figure the course out as she went.
“It was a little bit of a rough day today,” Regan said. “It was different but a great experience. The yards were a little longer than I’m used to playing so it was tough. I figured it out and grinded it out.”
Monty Tech placed first (319) while Franklin Tech took third (348). Monty Tech’s Brett Cherubini was the individual winner with a score of 74
Holyoke 3, Hampshire 0 – Aiden McCarthy, Maura Dulude and Gracie Chesmore all scored for Holyoke in a shutout win over Hampshire on Tuesday.
McCarthy also pocketed an assist, as did Kylie Blaha.
Hampshire goalie Rylie Simmons made eight saves in the loss.
Belchertown 8, Palmer 0 – Belchertown absolutely peppered Palmer goaltender Grace Hershowitz, who allowed eight goals but also made 26 stops in the loss.
Eight different players scored for the Orioles; Belchertown’s Edith Audette scored a goal and added two helpers and Isabella Cebula finished with a goal and an assist. Laura Cote dished out two assists in the win.
