NORTHAMPTON — Several Gazette staff members were honored this weekend in the New England Newspaper & Press Association’s 2024 Better Newspaper Competition, which held its awards ceremony in Portland, Maine.

After making a run to the state semifinals a year ago, the Northampton girls basketball team is once again in the mix for a Final Four berth.

NORTHFIELD — After pulling out a 53-50 win in the opening round of the Western Mass. Class D Tournament against Monson on Monday, the Smith Academy boys basketball team ran into a buzzsaw in the semifinals.

The first two days of the Northampton Winter Festival were blessed with excellent to adequate weather and large crowds. The eight-day festival continues today with a day-long George Washington’s Birthday sale in the Downtown Business area and a sports luncheon at the Hotel Northampton featuring the area’s two college men’s basketball teams, the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College.

AMHERST — LangMedia, the Five College Consortium’s online collection of learning resources focusing on less-commonly taught languages, has a new website. Funded by a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation, the redeveloped site offers free, high-quality language-learning tools in dozens of less-commonly taught languages.

Kalli White poured in 16 of her game-high 21 points in the second half, lifting No. 4 Granby to a 57-47 win over fifth-seeded Smith Academy in the PVIAC Class D girls basketball quarterfinal round on Friday night in Granby.

BOSTON — Athletes and teams from across the Valley are set to compete in the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center this weekend, starting with Amherst, Holyoke and Northampton competing in the Division 3 meet on Friday before Frontier, Hampshire and South Hadley participate in the Division 5 meet on Sunday.

Cameron Graves scored a season-high 17 points, and the Smith Academy boys basketball team turned a 19-16 halftime lead into a 44-40 victory over Hampshire Regional in Hampshire League North action on Friday night in Westhampton. The game was tied headed into the fourth quarter before the Falcons won the final eight minutes 14-10.

In a massive shakeup at the University of Massachusetts School of Education, Dean Dwight Allen has resigned, and Associate Dean Atron Gentry has been fired, the Gazette learned today. The resignation and dismissal come in the wake of several weeks of reports that funds at the School of Education may have been spent on purposes other than those for which they were intended.

NORTHAMPTON — State legislators representing Hampshire and Franklin counties signaled that they were prepared to defend protections for immigrants, the environment and transgender people in Massachusetts as the new federal administration under President Donald Trump moves to limit or scrap them.

The Hampshire Regional boys basketball team erupted for a season-high 81 points en route to an 81-71 win over Turners Falls in Westhampton on Friday night.

February is on the horizon, which means the eight (boys and girls combined) Western Massachusetts tournaments are as well. Teams across the valley are hoping to play their best basketball of the season over the next several weeks to be in the best position possible to compete for a sectional crown.
