NORTHAMPTON — The third quarter of Wednesday night’s Western Mass. Class A semifinal between No. 2 Northampton and No. 3 Minnechaug marked the most points the Blue Devils had surrendered in a frame in the sectional tournament. Northampton led by 10 at halftime, and a Bri Heafey triple boosted its advantage to 25-12. But the Blue Devils watched their once 13-point lead slip to six as a stretch of defensive lapses allowed the Falcons to go on a 10-3 run.

On the road against one of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the UMass women’s basketball team was right where it needed to be entering the fourth quarter of Sunday’s pivotal league contest.

AMHERST — Allie Palmieri stepped into a 3-pointer and drilled it with 3 minutes, 37 seconds to go in the fourth quarter of the UMass women’s basketball team’s game against Davidson on Saturday afternoon – cutting the Minutewomen’s deficit to 10 points (48-38). They hadn’t played well offensively all game, but their defense continued to turn the Wildcats over and give their offense a chance to get back in it.
Cameron Graves scored a season-high 17 points, and the Smith Academy boys basketball team turned a 19-16 halftime lead into a 44-40 victory over Hampshire Regional in Hampshire League North action on Friday night in Westhampton. The game was tied headed into the fourth quarter before the Falcons won the final eight minutes 14-10.

AMHERST — I received a pair of texts about five minutes apart a half hour after the UMass men’s basketball team practically gave Saint Louis a crucial Atlantic 10 win on Tuesday night in the Mullins Center.

AMHERST — The rules were rather simple to Noah Lee, who stepped onto Jack Leaman Court inside the Mullins Center at halftime of Wednesday night’s women’s basketball game between the host Minutewomen and St. Bonaventure. Make four baskets – a layup, free throw, 3-pointer and half-court shot – and he’d be $10,000 richer.
