On March 1, the person once again impersonating the president signed an executive order declaring that English is the official language of the United States. The order stated, “A nationally designated language is at the core of a unified and cohesive society, and the United States is strengthened by a citizenry that can freely exchange ideas in one shared language.” Given that over 350 languages are spoken here, it is challenging to grasp the “free” part of the order.

AMHERST — There are times when a head coach does everything they can to put their team in the best possible position to win throughout a season and for whatever reason things still don’t work out. It can be recruiting prior to the year, preparation, in-game adjustments, tweaking substitution patterns based on matchups and anything in between.
The visiting Smith Vocational baseball team scored two runs in the first inning, and that was all the Vikings would need as Kaleb Jorritsma threw a gem on the mound. Jorritsma gave up just two hits and struck out 12 in a complete-game shutout, then reached base four times and added two RBIs at the plate to lead Smith Voc to a 7-0 win over Gateway on Monday afternoon.

AMHERST — Frank Martin has landed his first transfer of the offseason. On Monday morning, Donovan Brown committed to play basketball for the Minutemen next season. Brown played for Division 2 Florida Tech, where he averaged 20.7 points per game and shot just above 36 percent from beyond the arc.
